said Magsaysay and Padma Vibhushan awardee, novelist and social activist, Mahasweta Devi on Monday.
She was speaking at the book release function organized by Bharti Vidyapeeth in collaboration with Sahityapremi Bhagini Mandal, Pune. She released two volumes of Women’s literature in Indian Languages (1850-2000) here in the city on Monday.
Differentiating the image of traditional Indian women as suppressed and defenseless, Devi said that women in today’s world are more aware and able to voice their concerns whenever the need arises.
She further said that the British regime in India proved to be beneficial as it helped many women to come to the forefront, she said.
While talking about the gender discrimination amongst the women in tribal areas, she said that they were more aware of the rights and hence it led them to establish harmony with their urban counterparts.
The tribal practice more equality. There is no discrimination or oppression of women. Birth of girl child is heartily welcomed
she said.
The unveiled compilation of the volume is a literary venture of Indian women author’s during the last 150 years. The volume has been edited by a distinguished body of scholars including Chitra Mudgal, Manda Khandage, Vidya Deodhar, Neelima Gundi, and Nishikant Mirajkar.
