‘The day theater is off the stage, I am gone off the screen forever’: Nassuruddin Shah

It’s been almost a year that the city folks have not enjoyed Nassuruddin Shah on stage playing as a perfectionist in the theaters. But the long time you waited for an actor to come in the city and perform on stage is almost over! Yes, the actor was in the city yesterday and has promised to come back on Saturday for a play at the Ishanya Amphitheatre. He is going to present an English play The Caine Mutiny Court Martial.

Entre Event Management Company has organized the play.

This play basically talks about the time during and post-world war effect on the human beings around and stress it accompanies. The Caine MutinyCourt Martial has been adopted from a novel of Herman Wouk, a US based Novelist. The play is not a new for the actor as he has already gone through the novel and has experienced all the agonies people might have met with while the war was on.

Nassuruddin Shah went through the novel when he was barely 10 and was unable to understand the cry novel was trying to convey then to him. But as the years passed on, he began understanding the core of the novel and then and decided to stage it once before the audience in his life time.

And here is the actor all set to perform the same play in the city on coming Saturday at Ishaniya Amphitheatre.

Talking about his past days, he got a bit nostalgic and sensitive about the theme of the novel “It was a war film without guns going off and I couldn’t understand it. Decades later I chanced upon it and went through it devouringly. And the only one reading convinced me that this is the play that I should do,” he said.

When talking about the direction he says that I have directed a play not because I know what play is all about, but something compelled me to do it and I am helpless that have to do go ahead with the direction and acting part without knowing where I am going and what I am doing. It’s like a paper made ship flowing down all the way without knowing where it is going. And that is why, I love playing in theaters rather than working in a movie. Theatre for me is inseparable part of my life, the day theatre is off the stage, I am gone off-screen forever, said a die-hard fan of theater.

Nasir is going to accompany the cast for this play who all are graduate students of the Whistling Woods Film Institute, Mumbai, same institute where Nasir has been teaching for a decade now. Even though we all are aware of his passion for theatre, the famed actor- Director does theater not because he is committed to it, but doing it is a great fun, he concludes.
