Veteran actor, director and filmmaker Vijaya Mehata has been bestowed with ‘Tanveer Sanmaan’, an award that is given in the memory of Veteran actor Shri Ram Lagoo’s son-Tanveer who died some years back while traveling in a Mumbai local. The Tanveer Sanmaan was given away at the hands of editor of the city based Popular Prakashan on Tuesday.
“The years of contribution and hard work I put in the industry and theater finally seems to have been recognized by this award,” says the veteran actress and director while receiving the award.
Mehta reminisces, “Sahitay Sangh Karmabhumi proved to be the best platform during my college days for me to accelerate my career as an actress as well as director”. Mehta, who is also known as a Bai in the theatrical circle, was interacting with noted theater personalities like Joyti Subhash, Lagoo, and Madhav Vaze.
She reminds her days at Oxford, “When I was in Oxford University, there we were asked to represent our countries with the certain specialty in theater. There only I could understand the value of Marathi films and theatre as till then I was just doing European or British plays, but as a part of the practical performance I had to perform something that is truly Mahrashtrain and suddenly a thought struck to my mind that will everybody praise if I stage tamasha? I went ahead and presented the Mahrashtrian tamsah with lavani. I was left astonished as every single person sitting there was putting his hands together for my performance, says Mehta.
She also shared her experiences of working with great music directors like Bhaskar Chandvarkar and some other. She is also known to have trained some Marathi actors including Vikram Gokhale.
When she would conduct classes for her trainees, her sole aim was to make the performance truly natural and she wanted her actors to be open and keep exploring new avenues in the filed.
