A Jet Airways Flight from Bangalore to Pune had a close shave when a flying bird hit against their Boeing 737-800 aircraft. There were 158 passengers and the crew on board. The incident happened while the flight was landing at Lohegaon airport in Pune around 12.30 pm yesterday. Luckily there are no reports of any casualties as the plane landed safely. While talking to correspondents, an AAI officer said that a big mishap could be avoided because of the presence of mind shown by the pilot.
According to the reports obtained from the Jet Airways Spokesperson, the Bangalore- Pune flight no 9W-2351 could have met with a major accident as a bird hit against it while landing. Fortunately all the 158 passengers were deplaned safely and nothing serious happened.
However, the passengers who were to fly in the return flight no 9W-2352 to Bangalore, which was supposed to take off at 2.15 pm as per the regular schedule, were forced a two hour wait on account of the incident.
The AAI official told our correspondent that it was when the airline engineers were having their regular customary check of the plane that they could detect the bird hit. Luckily the hit did not affect the engine part. The port side of the lower flap of the flight on the left side of the pilot however was damaged due to the hit. The engineers reported to the concerned authorities in time and asked for a replacement part. Another aircraft form Mumbai too was called upon to carry the passengers on the return flight.
Finally at 4.43pm the damaged part could be replaced and the additional flight took off for Bangalore with the passengers of flight no.9W-2352.
Bird hits are one of the very common types of accident a plane can meet with. A flying bird usually hits the plane either at the time of a take off or while landing. The Jet Airways spokesperson told the correspondents that their pilots are specially trained to tackle such a situation and that’s how a major mishap could be avoided on Thursday as well.
