German Bakery Blast: February 13, 2010
It’s beyond imagination that a comparatively docile and calm city like Pune could become one of the targets of the bloodthirsty terrorists. Terror struck with its all might at the German Bakery, a popular joint in Pune, on the eve of February 13, 2010. The entire city was gripped in a queer feeling of terror mixed with disbelief when a dreadful bomb blast shattered the entire bakery premises, leaving 59 severely wounded and 17 dead.
The joint was packed with youngsters and tourists, who were busy enjoying and exchanging bites with friends and family. At around 7.15 pm, when the place was chock-a-block with customers, an unattended bag exploded, shattering the entire bakery and throwing several people in mid air. Within fraction of second, the bakery was down and the road running parallel to it was filled with thick blood as bodies were thrown far across the street. Most of the deceased were in their early 20’s.
It is true that the horrific memories of the blast shall never fade, especially for those who lost their loved ones in the dreadful incident. But any act of terror can never deter the spirits of Puneites, who have joined hands to start this delightful bakery once again.
Sahara Pune Warriors: Pune’s own IPL team – March, 2010
It was a sheer moment of pride, as the BCCI made the announcement of Pune’s IPL team. The city was wrapped with euphoria and the cheer spread in all quarters in no time, as Puneites expressed their joy via social-networking sites, media and individual blogs.
Pune team’s franchise was won by the Sahara India Parivar after bidding a whooping price of $370 million. Aptly christened, the Sahara Pune Warriors, the team will definitely be one the favorites to win the next year’s IPL. It will indeed be great fun to watch our own team battle it out in the next IPL season.
With the team’s announcement, the construction of a new state-of-the-art stadium with a capacity of 55,000 people has also begun at Gahunje, near Talegaon, which shall certainly add a new zing in the next IPL season.
Meeran Borwankar: First woman Police Commissioner to take charge of Pune on July 28, 2010
The decision to appoint Meeran Borwankar as the first woman Police Commissioner of Pune has certainly gone down well with Puneites. A woman of substance and mettle, she has constantly come up with innovative means to tackle crime and corruption in the city. Renowned as the toughest officer, she has several accolades to her name, and we hope that her stint as the top cop of Pune remains a very fruitful and successful one.
Rise in prices of regular commodities/Inflation
Prices of essential commodities touched sky-high in the year 2010. Fuel prices have also increased six times during this year, throwing a common man’s budget out of control. And the situation worsened with unexpected rains, which sky-rocketed the prices of vegetable, adding to the predicament of several middle class and low-income groups. Onions priced at Rs 60 a kilo has fallen into the category of luxury items and has gone out of a common man’s meal. If the prices don’t come down, then probably it will be treated as an exotic vegetable, as city restaurants and hotels have already reduced its usage and are serving cucumbers, carrots or tomatoes in its place.
Therefore, it can be said that the year 2010 was a year of mixed bag of emotions. The German Bakery incident showed how vulnerable human life is, sports on the other hand helped in uniting people.
