Even after the State Urban Development Department issued the notice to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to allow city’s wada owners to revamp their century old wadas, the response PMC has got so far is very forlorn and worrisome. The reason behind reluctance is that the most of the wada owners from the city hesitate to do up the wada’s repairing work as they feel that it would be better move somewhere else than repair an old construction.
The notice was issued only after the survey conducted by the PMC which showed the dilapidated condition of around 1,600 wadas in the city.
However, The Pune Municipal Corporation has received 33 applications stating that they are ready to revamp the wada, civic officials said.
The old Pune that consists of all peths including Kasba Peth, Somwar Peth, Raviwar Peth and Nana Peth, housing about 10,000 wadas, of them 750 are waiting to be repaired soon. As per the directives issued by the SUDD, wada owners will be asked for the repair work and if they allow, then the revamp work will begin within 48 hours. There is need to fill up some documents by the wada owners before the tenants begin the repair work. However, the tenants will not be allowed to make any changes in structure and style of the construction which is a sign of bygone era.
An official from civic structural engineering section said, “We had expected more applications in the initial year. From Bhavani Peth, Kasba Peth and Vishrambaugwada areas, that house old wadas on a large-scale, we received 13 applications from tenants. From the Sahakarnagar area, 20 applications were received.”
He said,
Of 33 applications, we gave permission to carry out the repair work only to 14 tenants, as others did not furnish the necessary documents.
He said the low turnout is due to various reasons, the prominent being the differences between wada owners and tenants.
BJP MLA Girish Bapat said
The response of the wada tenants has been very cold. There are problems in its implementation. For example, if a tenant from the third floor wants to carry out a repair work, he needed to get consent from other wada members who might refuse. Secondly, the differences between the wada owners and tenants always remain. Thirdly, tenants are allowed only to make structural changes and not to increase the area of the wada, which is why tenants want to stay away from it.
Bapat called for an appointment of a special authority like that for slum rehabilitation.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
