When it comes to animal rights in India, no particular voice rings exceptionally loud and clear on the streets. Instead, there are people who would even look the other way if they saw an animal in pain or shoo away a hungry dog without thinking twice. On the 29th of April, Yaman Chhaya decided he wouldn’t remain a silent by stander. Late one April night, this Pune based radio engineer, found that eight stray dogs in his neighborhood had been poisoned. He immediately called a veterinarian doctor to his aid, together they were able to save one of the dogs. Later that night, Chhaya heard the low rumble of a van and saw the dead bodies of the dogs being moved into it. Following them, he managed to get the registration number of the vehicle. News reports from that night claimed that around 40 dogs had been poisoned and found dead that night. A few eye witnesses allege that this was the doing of the Pune Municipal Corporation, while the PMC claims ignorance on the matter. Complaints have been filed and statements made.
In recognition of his heroic effort to save the helpless animals, PETA has announced a ‘Hero to Animals Award’ for Chhaya. Madhuri Deshmukh, PETA’s campaign coordinator said that Chhaya’s initiative is deserving of recognition. She goes on to say that PETA encourages everyone to take action when they see an animal in need.
Under the Animal Birth Control Rule (2001), local governments are forbidden to kill dogs unless the canine is infected with rabies. Dilip Pardeshi, the assistant medical officer of health and the PMC dog unit chief, reassures citizens that the PMC has only sterilized stray dogs and marked them before returning them to the area they were picked up from initially. Working with Blue Cross, he explains that they send puppies to adoption camps held across the city.
For citizens interested in helping out, the next adoption camp will be held in Aundh on the 9th of May, 2010.
