Bengalis are known to have an innate love for theatre and it is that love that prompted few like-minded people in Pune to start a socio-cultural organization named Dishari almost 17 years ago. Dishari principally aims to uphold Bengali culture in Pune via theatre, and like every year, this year also the group is organizing its 17th Pune International Theatre Festival this year to be held at the Balgandharva Rangmandir from November 19 to 21.
“Initially, the festival was more of a private affair with local Bengali groups from Pune performing. But slowly, the hunger to stage better plays prompted us to bring in talents from all across the nation. I am glad to say that the festival has gone international this year with a theatre group from Bangladesh also performing,” informs Arindam De, General Secretary, Dishari.
Theatre artists who are expected to attend the festival are Bibhash Chakraborty, Amalesh Chakraborty, Girish Karnad, Shreeram Lagoo, Nasiruddin Yusuf, Shimul Yousuf, Malaoy Biswas and Haimanti Banerjee.
On 19th, a comic-play called Jaga Kichuri will be staged by Anya Theatre, Kolkata and directed by Bibhash Chakraborty. On 20th the audience can witness two more plays, namely Punorujjiban and Binodini. Punorijjibon, which is staged by Aneek, Kolkata and directed by Amalesh Chakraborty, is a Bengali adaptation of Henry Ibsen’s renowned play ‘When we dead awaken’. Binodini, directed by Nasiruddin Yusuf is be staged by the Dhaka Theatre and is a monologue wherein a woman will play sixty two different characters.
Dishari will present a play on the final day of the festival called Agni Jal. The play is a Bengali trans-creation by Bibhash Chakraborty of Girish Karnad’s originally written Fire and Rain.
“Marathi and Bengali culture have a strong resemblance and this is the primary reason why we Dishari have managed to get so much support and encouragement from the locales community in Pune. The group intends to contribute towards the growth of theatre as an art form. Though the theatre fest is primarily in Bengali till now, we have decided to make it multi-lingual from next year,” said Arindam.
The festival also has a social bearing as the profit earned due the three days of the festival will be donated to Pune Blind Men’s Association. Audience can contribute directly by registering themselves for eye donation or purchasing donation passes.
