With the onset of winter, thousands birds flock the city. It’s that time of the year when you can go birding in the congested city areas, hinterlands, on hill slopes and riversides- almost everywhere in the city. Bird watchers can scan almost any part of the city.
However there are certain spots where popular species are regular. In the Sinhgad valley, flycatchers, woodpeckers and tits are sure to be sighted. The shikhara is often seen fluttering around the city areas.
Pashan lake, CME Lake in Pimpri are treasure troves for bird lovers. Scores of water birds are spotted here. Here one catches a glimpse of black winged stilts, migratory ducks and the famous Siberian cranes.
For those not satisfied with merely watching the feathered breed, there’s also the odd competition.
The HSBC Pune Bird Race
Held every year across various cities, the event is first of its kind in the country. Pune has hoisted the competition for the third time in 2009. With a sizeable young population, the event gained immense popularity. The India Bird Race has been inspired by the Hongkong bird race. Studying the geography of the region a checklist of birds is prepared. Over 300 species of birds have been spotted in the past 20 years.
The competition has teams of four spend an entire day scanning the city and surrounding areas to record different species of birds. The team that secures the highest tally of species wins. The competition is from dawn to dusk where participants can form their own teams and choose their route. However there must one proficient birder, to captain the team. There is no registration fee for the event and it is open to all. Participants are provided with a bird log book that consists of a checklist of all species of birds recorded with geographical limits of the city, and columns for the observation. Two special adjudicators, who are either highly experienced bird watchers or respected conservationists, analyze the event and declare the winners at the end of the day.
The event has helped stimulate wide spread interest in bird-watching as a hobby. “It has given us a good idea of the nature of this region’s birdlife and helped build up support for environment and nature conservation,” says Kavita, a bird enthusiast.
