An evening to remember!!

By Sana Memon
Students of blind SchoolWith celebration in the atmosphere, first year students of the Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication (UG), Vimanagar, Shweta Dandekar and Sana Memon, spent their Christmas Eve with the students of the Poona Blind School, Koregoan Park. Not coming from an artistic background, the two set forth with the task of teaching clay modelling to the visually challenged. Some enthusiastic volunteers and friends accompanied them.
From the sponsors to the final execution, the two did it all. Friends and neighbours helped towards the cause.

The main objective of the workshop was to develop an understanding and awareness of the concepts of scale and texture. It would provide an opportunity to the students to portray their creativity and give the teachers an insight into the child’s thought process. Their gross motor skills were put to test.
The students of 2nd to 7th Standard participated in this workshop. Initially they were a bit hesitant, but later realised it could be fun. The teachers encouraged them on and even participated themselves. The volunteers ensured that every child was comfortable and was having fun. They started off by making basic shapes. The excitement rose to a whole new level and the young artists made some exceptionally beautiful artefacts. From cups to mobile phones to Ganesh idols the students made accurate shapes. The cheerful chaos was enough music for the ears. The absence of one sense was perfectly made up by the other senses. The student’s willingness and determination to learn was commendable.

The delighted administrator applauded the students and thanked the organisers, “It was great to see the teenagers put in their sincere efforts towards such a cause. Our students get to interact with the outside world only through such platforms. The workshop helped the teachers a lot as they got a better understanding of the thoughts and ideas in the student’s minds.” She also welcomed more of such initiatives.

The children with the best creations were recognized among their friends. At the end of this one and a half hour learning experience, each student was given Plasticine clay to take back and refine their potential further.

The event was heartening and extremely satisfying. It was great to know that the kids enjoyed fully while learning something new. It just goes to show that everyone has the potential to excel if given the right opportunities,

said Sana and Shweta about their experience.
