The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Pune, introduced the animal adoption scheme a month back, and it has received overwhelming response from citizens. Till date, many animals including bear, leopard, tiger, spotted deer, tortoise and peacock have been adopted by individuals.
According to the adoption scheme, any individual, organization or corporate sector can adopt an animal, sponsor food for all the animals or group of animals or the entire enclosure of species by bearing the cost.
The donation received under this scheme is channelized towards providing nutritious feed, proper care, and veterinary treatment to the adopted animals, which are managed and looked after in the zoo itself.
“The idea to initiate the adoption scheme germinated from the need to make Puneites come forward and support the cause for animals. And so far, the response has been encouraging. We basically aim to involve common man in conserving nature. Individuals did come forward to adopt, but we are yet to receive any positive response from organizations and the corporate sector,” said Rajkumar Jadhav, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.
US-based Ketan Patwardhan, who is a keen nature lover and conserver, wished to contribute towards tiger conservation. Accordingly, he and his wife sponsored a tigress named Damini for three months in name of their nine year old niece Tanvi Patwardhan.
Originally from Pune, Patwardhan said, “The idea is to generate awareness among children to understand the importance of wildlife conservation and work towards it when they grow up. Tanvi and her friends visited the zoo after adoption. I hope that her friends also come ahead and contribute towards animal conservation.”
Striking identical notes, Shweta Singh, a housewife and resident of Rasta Peth adopted a family of deer and peacock for a month. “When I heard about the adoption scheme, I got really excited and knew this is the best opportunity to work towards animal conservation and protection. I have adopted in name of my mother, late Sangeeta Singh. And I must add that the deer family comprise of a pair and their fawn and the peacocks are also very beautiful,” said Shweta.
The donation made in favor of animal adoption is tax deductible and one shall also receive a certificate of adoption. Furthermore, the name of the adopter will be displayed in front of the adopted animal enclosure. Individuals, families, organizations, schools, business and corporate houses, can all come forward and contribute towards the cause.
