The Azim Premji University (APU) has decided to set up an institute of learning and development in Pune soon. Pune will be one of the 50 districts where an APU institute will be established. Through the master in education course introduced by the university, it will primarily focus on developing teacher educators. Furthermore, a model school will also be set up in Pune district in the next five years, which will offer scholarships and assistantship for the deprived.
The Azim Premji University has been established by the Azim Premji Foundation with a funding of over Rs 9,000 crore, and the first academic year is scheduled to commence from July this year. “We have been working towards a deep, at-scale and institutionalized impact on the quality of education in this country. Some of the university’s key principles include knowledge creation, talent development, and building institutions for bringing about a positive and fruitful change in the current education scenario,” said Dileep Ranjekar, chief executive officer, Azim Premji Foundation, in a press conference on Tuesday.
“The absence of large number of committed, qualified and trained professionals is one of the major constraints in education and development fields. The courses that we have designed in our university will definitely prepare outstanding professionals in education,” Ranjekar added.
“It is a positive development, as Pune city needs teachers and educators who can create difference in the lives of the students. Formation of this university will definitely help to change the education system for good,” said Prasanna Natu, a resident of Nana Peth.
