The world’s largest denim producer, Arvind Mills, is looking forward to launching India’s first branded organic food range. Based in Ahmedabad, Arvind Mills is also known as the largest maker of readymade apparel in the Indian market.
With the decision to come up with a new name for their organic produce, Arvind Mills is currently in talks with Spencer’s Retail to stock their range of organic products. Initially the products will include produce like green gram, wheat, Soya, black gram, lentils, sunflower, besan, turmeric, ginger and chilies.
Organic produce, especially for cotton, is cultivated by rotation. This means that the farmer rotates his produce for the duration of the previous crop. Arvind Mills has a contract with organic cotton farmers for over 30,000 acres, which are split over cotton and a food crop. This is divided into two, which allows half of the entire land to grow either cotton or a food crop over the period of one year, which is how long a cotton crop takes.
About 4,000 farmers in the Akola district have newly entered into contract with Arvind Mills, which has allowed them to grow from the mediocre size of 10,000 acres to their current size.
Arvind Mills is looking to introduce atleast 30 products into the Indian market.
