The PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) recently made a cell where citizens can register complaints relating to the violating of election code of conduct. The PCMC commissioner Ashish Sharma told the reporters that the citizens can lodge these complaints with the election department by dialing a phone number 020-67331155.
He added that “The counting of votes will be done on February 17. But if the state election commission permits, the same can be done on February 16 itself, after the voting process is over.” He informed that about 60,000 new voters in the Pimpri Chinchwad area since the registration drive started on October 1. The first list of voters shall be made public on January 12 and 17. He said that the voters list, according to their wards, will be made known on January 23.
Every ward shall have polling booths. They also plan create an awareness among the public so that they have information regarding the polling booths in their wards. A single booth will have the facility for a minimum of 900 to cast their vote. There will be about 1,400 polling booths in the PCMC area.
The citizens also seemed to have geared up for the upcoming general body elections. This year, about 25 housing societies have applied to the election department of the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) for a polling booth on their premises for the upcoming civic body election that be held on February 16. An election officer of the civic body, Pravin Ashtikar said that “It’s just the start of the process and residential societies are coming forward in good numbers seeking polling booths. We have already got 25 applications in the last few days.” He said that they have received applications from Karvenagar, Kothrud, Deccan Gymkhana and Ahmednagar Road.
The election department might also set up polling booths in the premises of the shopping malls of the city. He said that this might initiate more people to cast their vote.
However, the municipal commissioners have received strict orders from the state election commission that they should permit polling booths in only those housing societies that have at least 1,000 voters. Providing security and other “government establishments and infrastructure” for these polling stations shall be the responsibility of the municipal commissioners.
In order to ensure that the code of conduct is observed, the election department will appoint 14 ward wise returning officers for the purpose. These officers will also be responsible for the coordination of the polling booths that will be set up in the malls and the societies.
