After the hike in the petrol prices, the autorickshaw unions in the city want an increase in the fares. They said that the fares have not been hiked by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) although the prices of petrol have been hiked twice since April, 2011.
Baba Adhav, the head of the Rickshaw Panchayat submitted a letter demanding a hike in the prices of the fares to the chairman of RTA. He was supported by Maharashtra Rickshaw Sena and the Pune City Autorickshaw Federation.
The passengers have to pay Rs. 11 for the first kilometer and then Rs 9 for every kilometer. Baba Adhav has requested the chairman of RTA to raise the prices of the fares considering the hike in the prices of petrol, the spare parts, maintenance costs and inflation. “An auto driver fails to meet even his daily expenses and the existing fare structure has made his business a loss-making enterprise. The RTA should consider a fare revision of at least two rupees.” remarked Baba Shinde, a member of Pune City Autorickshaw Federation. He lamented that the monthly spending of an autorickshaw driver has increased by Rs 300 and driving an autorickshaw hardly meets his daily expenses.
A hike in the prices in the petrol prompted many of these drivers to turn to CNG fuel instead of petrol. However, these drivers found that there was an irregular supply of this fuel in the city. Besides, there are very few such gas stations in the city that supply CNG. This prevents them from ferrying passengers on a daily basis. These drivers also waste a lot of time in queues at a CNG refilling center.
Although the fares of the rickshaw might get revised, the ultimate sufferer shall be the passengers. They may opt to commute by the PMPML buses. However, even these buses are facing a shortage of manpower and good buses. They are just not adequate to handle the sudden increase of passengers.
