Friday gave the city a major setback when in the formation of the new Prithviraj Chavan cabinet, MLA Ramesh Bagwe who was Minister of State (home) in the cabinet of the former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, failed to retain his post. Narayan Rane too fell short of efforts to induct his supporter Vinayak Nimhan, Congress MLA from Shivajinagar, as minister.
Bagwe, a partisan of MP Suresh Kalmadi, was pretty optimistic about retaining his post. However, there was also the news coming that he might get sidelined this time as senior Congress leader Rane was insisting on Nimhan’s inclusion in the cabinet.
After having lost the post Mr. Bagwe was talking to the correspondents yesterday. He said, “I don’t have any complaints. It is because of the Congress party that I was able to work as minister of state in the previous cabinet. If the party provides me an opportunity to work in the cabinet in future, I will follow the orders and contribute to the welfare of the state”.
However, the fact that their leader has been sidelined was hard for Bagwe’s supporters to digest. They were utterly unhappy at the turn of the events and have submitted a letter to the district collector. The letter demands Bagwe’s inclusion in the cabinet. Bagwe represents Pune Cantonment and has a large number of supporters in city slums. Bagwe belongs to the Matang community which in Pune has a considerable presence.
Bagwe’s brief stint as minister, showed him stuck in many controversies. Among them his differences with city police Commissioner Satyapal Singh sought the attention most. His picking up Rahul Gandhi’s shoes in Mumbai too hit the headlines.
The Congress Party has been ruling the city politics for too long. The Party gave a chance to four of its MLAs Prakash Dhere, Balasaheb Shivarkar, Chandrakant Chhajed and Ramesh Bagwe in the State Cabinet. Mr. Sharad Pawar in the year 1978 got an opportunity to form his Progressive Democratic Front government. He then included MLAs from Pune Shanti Naik and Bhai Vaidya in the ministry. Later the BJP-Sena stint during 1995-1999 made Shashikant Sutar from Shiv Sena the agriculture minister and Dilip Kambale from BJP the minister of state for social welfare.
