The dream to achieve international standards for the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports city at Balewadi, still remains a dream. The sports city was built by pouring 400 crore rupees at the time of common wealth games in 2008.
After common wealth games, the SCS city was hosting two junior level world cups, only then the players complained about the space and the facilities provided to them.
The badminton hall had to convert into volleyball hall as there was no place available to host it.
Similarly, the World Amateur Cadet Wrestling Cadet Championship was conducted at different hall which was reserved for boxing championship. And to talk about the current situation, the upcoming Under-18 Asian Women’s Basketball championship which is scheduled in the Dec 2009, is going to take place in the badminton hall due to lack of the place.
Out of the 400 crore spent for the development work at Balewadi stadium, Rs 150 crore went into the hockey poly grass stadium alone. The badminton hall cost Rs 76 crore and Rs 35 crore was spent on the shooting range. While the table tennis hall accounted for Rs 10.87 crore, renovation of the athletics stadium required Rs 23 crore
said Sanjay Sabnis, assistant director of the Balewadi sports complex.
He also talked about the extra expenditure state government spends every year.
The water and electricity bills come at over Rs 7 crore per annum. It costs the state government another Rs 1 crore a year to maintain the stadium. Though this would harm pitch conditions, we are forced to host such events for revenue. We have allotted a separate land behind the swimming venue for events like these to solve this problem

Many players have doubts whether the sport city will ever achieve the international standards or not- including Jose Brasa, Team India Hockey Coach.
At the start of the training camp in June, I was not able to conduct regular practice sessions for the team because of ‘weak sprinkler systems’. The result: the team was left without a pitch to practice for three days.
