Pune is known for a number of tourist attractions in and around the city. The cultural capital of the Maharashtra State of India, Pune boasts of a rich legacy of history and culture. Bedse Caves add to this legacy and retain their own importance as a tourist spot though quite old.

Where are they located?
The caves are located in the Maval Taluka of the district of Pune around 35 km from the city. Being so close to the city, people from Pune often arrange a one day trip to the Bedse Caves.
All humans love art in one form or the other. It is said that artists are God’s special creation and hence closer to Him. God creates them in His own image and so they possess an inherent creative genius. An atheist might not believe in this unless and until he comes and sees the exquisite masterpieces crafted in stone here in the Bedse Caves.
History and the Architectural Specifications:
The historical references say that the caves might be the work of the 1st century B.C. even after ages the caves continue to enchant the visitors and this speaks for the artistic excellence of the hands that created this work.
The caves have been crafted in the Budddhist style of carvings. The two important divisions of these caves are the prayer hall and the monastery. The prayer hall is called Chaitya whereas the monastery is known as Vihara. The stupa (i.e. a mound like structure containing Buddhist relics) of the Chaitya is larger as compared to that of the vihara. You can’t help but feel like bowing down before these works of the unknown artists.
A perfect place for Meditation:
Those who are interested in meditation and contemplation, let me tell you, the Bedse Caves is the perfect place for them as the place is far away from the common humdrum hurries and worries.
An Important Suggestion:
An important suggestion for the visitors! Both these caves are facing eastwards and hence they are a treat to watch bathing in the morning sunshine. So whenever you plan a trip to the caves, reach there early in the morning.
During the British Raj, the caves were maintained properly. Artists with a deft hand were appointed for painting these caves. This was the situation until around 1861. The British officers who were also the art lovers used to frequent the place. The maintenance of the caves was one of the ways used by the local authorities to please the British officers. The result of this excessive painting in the caves, however, has been the loss of remnants of plaster.
You have to climb up a few steps leading to the caves.
Trilogy of Caves:
Bedse Caves are not as popular as the Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves in Pune. That is why the place is comparatively less crowded. The State Government is planning to undertake a project for the development of the area as a tourist spot.
Karla-Bhaje and Bedse caves make a perfect trilogy of the caves and must be visited in a single trip. From Bedse Caves, you can also make a trip to the quartet of Visapur, Tung, Lohagad and Tikona forts along with that to the Pawana dam. You will definitely enjoy the trip to the Bedse caves. Art work here will fill your heart with a sense of awe.
How to get there?
From Pune you can get to the Bedse Caves via Kamshet. You can also take a route via Paud-Tikona Peth- Pawananagar. A route from Somatne Phata on the NH4 Highway too will take you to the Caves.
Food
Keep your own food as you can’t be sure of any food facilities in such a remote area.
So plan a trip to the Caves and see the works crafted by deft hands. Reach early in the morning and see the caves drenched in the morning sunshine.
If you have visited Bedse caves in Pune, do tell us about this place through comment.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
