Puneites beware! If you are one of the many recipients of an email from ‘Gmail Account Services’ seeking your username, password, and other details, then better watch out. The mail, which has been smartly worded, is not from Google or its web-based email service, Gmail, and could fool you to disclose your personal details under the threat of closing your existing account.
Beginning with words, “Attn: Account Holder”, the mail further goes on to state that Gmail “is facing congestion due to the anonymous registration of free Gmail accounts and, therefore, we are shutting down some free Gmail accounts and your account is among those to be deleted”. Then the mail asks the user to disclose the username, password, country and date of birth to “re-confirm your account details in order to commence immediate upgrading of your account from being deleted.”
Many Gmail account holders on receiving this mail were left panic-stricken, and before it was revealed that it is a cyber fraud, there were many who succumbed to this ploy. Cyber fraud experts described the mail as a ‘phishing attack, which is a criminally fraudulent process.
Rohit Nag, a student in Pune also received this mail. “When I received that mail, initially I got a bit worried. But I knew about ‘phishing’ and ‘hacking’, so started calling up my friends to confirm if they have received any similar mail. I also checked on the internet to find out whether Google was really deleting accounts. On finding no credible information, I simply deleted the mail.”
Cyber criminals create authentic looking mails in an attempt to acquire sensitive information like usernames, passwords and credit card details. They are no longer driven by fame, but are looking to steal money, identity and even one’s reputation. The information hacked can be traded for money in the online black market, which is currently valued at around $6 billion.
“Cyber criminals are getting more sophisticated and are coming up with new and clever means to lure users into revealing their personal details. An email received from a known source would be trusted more by the users, so this mode of attack has a greater success rate. People need to be a little cautious while indulging in online activities,” said Ibrahim, Symantec’s consumer business head, Asia.
