Bhajiram temple is one of the beautiful temples in Pune; but it has remained unnoticed till now and attracts people on the special occasions like the Ramnavami Festival.
Ram Temples in Pune can be an interesting topic for discussion. Huge temples showing architectural excellence and beautiful idols are the main features of these temples. The Bhajiram Temple is smaller as compared to many other Ram temples in Pune. But the beauty of the temple lies in the idols of the deities and the strong faith of the devotees in Lord Ram.
Lord Ram and Hindu Religion:
Ramayan, an Indian epic, is considered to be one of the best epics of the world and rightly so. The author of the epic Rishi Valmiki never tries to preach. Noble thought, great values and morals emerge out of the story part. Ram, who is considered to be the seventh incarnation of Hindu Lord Vishnu, is the hero of the epic. Essentially Ramayana is the story of the conflict between evil and good. Ram stands as an embodiment of all the virtues and Ravan who is also an intellectual sort of a person stands for the evil. The main story deals with Sita’s (Ram’s wife) abduction by Ravan and her subsequent rescue by Ram. The hero emerges as an ideal son, an ideal brother, an ideal student, an ideal spouse and of course an ideal king and these qualities impart Ram the status of a deity.
Lord Ram is also regarded as a historical figure rather than just an imaginary character penned by Valmiki. However one may take it, but one thing is for sure, Lord Ram occupies an important part of Hindu religion.
The Bhajiram Temple:
Where is it located?
The temple is situated in the Narayan Peth which lies in the west of the city of Pune. The temple stands right in front of the Narayan Peth Police Station. As you come straight from the Modi Ganapati Temple Northwards, a two minute walk takes you to the Bhajiram Temple. The Omkareshwar Shiva Temple, too can be remembered as a nearby landmark.
Historical References:
Some references in the government records say that the construction of the temple is contemporary to that of the famous Tulshibaug Ram Temple. The temple must have been built around 1762.
Why the name Bhajiram?
It is necessary to note the etymology of the name Bhajiram here. “Bhaji” is the Marathi equivalent for the English word “vegetable”. In the good olden days there used be a vegetable market around this temple and hence the name “Bhajiram”
Details of the Construction:
The beautiful marble idols of Lord Ram, Lakshman and Sita stand on the stone pedestal and are an excellent piece of work indeed. The idols are around 2 ½ feet high. The wooden artwork in the sanctum is awesome. On either side of the idols you see the idols of Lord Ganesh and the Shiva Lingas. Right in front of the Ram idol stands Hanuman as an embodiment of determination, dedication and devotion. The idol of Hanuman is around two feet high and is made of stone.
The sabhamandap of the temple is 15 X 15 feet in length and width. You can also see beautiful carvings on the Shikhara of the temple.
Every day pooja is offered to Lord Ram; but usually you don’t see much crowd in this temple. However on the special occasions like the Ramanavami Festival, you see many devotees coming to seek the divine grace of Lord Ram. Special poojas, abhishekas and spiritual sermons are organized by the temple management committee.
How to reach?
The temple is in the middle of the city and so reaching there is not a problem. Hiring an auto rickshaw is the best option. Otherwise from the Deccan Bus stop you can also walk the distance.
So visit the temple, see the idols and get satisfaction of seeing a beautiful artifact.
