The National Medicinal Plant Board along with the Union Ministry of Health has decided to turn schools in Pune green in the next couple of months. The Union Government has granted fresh funds to the directorate of social forestry to help National Green Corps schools get environmental friendly and plant herbal gardens. With technical assistance by the social forestry department, each school will convert 1000 sq. metres into a herbal garden with medicinal plants like Basil (Tulsi), sandalwood, Garnicia (Kokum) and Psyllium (Isabgol), to name a few.
This step aims to sensitize students toward the conservation of medicinal plants and their usages. A part of their extra-curricular activities at school, students will raise and maintain these gardens. They will be made aware of biodiversity in the world of botany and will be educated about global warming and other environmental issues. Plans are to have a garden that is equipped with the basic water pipes and sprinklers for irrigation, organic manure and other necessary tools required for its implementation and upkeep.
Creating this bond between the younger generation and nature will help them develop a healthier attitude towards the preservation of the earth than yesterday’s adults.
Another step in the realm of preservation is the much needed Members of Tiger Action Force who have taken up preserving the country’s national animal. Its members hail from all walks of life and they work towards protecting the environment and making it safer for the local wildlife.
Closer to home, the Tiger Action Force is working toward preserving the Pashan Lake. The wetland that used to be a haven for birds of migratory species is slowly dwindling in health, which in turn is making it a lesser favorite amongst the birds. The NGO under the watchful eye of Prof. Sangeev Nalavade (of Fergusson College) is preparing a draft to be submitted to the PMC for conservation of the wetland.
