While activist in Mumbai are upset over a notice that appeared in the Midday papers on Saturday which publicly declared a man to be HIV positive, Pune took to the streets to march for the fight against the stigma surrounding HIV. Marking the International Candlelight Memorial Day they walked in memory of people who had lost their lives due to AIDS in one of the oldest grassroots movement agains HIV and AIDS.
Led by Wake up India, a coalition of NGOs, corporates, youth networks, media professionals and other individuals, they set out with a rigorous aim to make the city aware and dawn a healthier attitude towards HIV. There were people with black strips of cloth covering their eyes and mouths and their hands tied with ropes to symbolize the discrimination a person infected with HIV goes through. Volunteers held up placards that demanded – ‘break the silence, set us free’ while other volunteers distributed educational material on the subject.
The community organized a march that led from Sassoon Hospital;s ART centre and Golibar Maidan to M. G. Road. A candlelight vigil was later observed at Aurora Towers followed by invigorating speeches from members of the group.
