The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) created a separate environment cell six years ago for monitoring the pollution level in the city. The cell’s primary function is to bring out a yearly environment status report and place it before the general body.
“The cell basically measures and monitors the air, noise and water pollution levels in Pune. There are different parameters on which samples and data are collected and after a thorough test of these samples in the PMC’s laboratories, an environment report is created. It is a continuous process and we all are working diligently and efficiently to meet our goals,” said Mangesh Dighe, the environment officer who took charge of the cell last year.
The good development is that the pollution level in Pune is not alarming at this stage, though it is increasing with each passing hour. Air pollution is on a rise for the number of vehicles in the city is increasing. To prevent it, the thrust is to have vehicles that run on green fuel like compressed natural gas (CNG). Now when it comes to water pollution, PMC treats more than 70% of the sewage water that flows to the rivers and they are making an effort to ensure that 100% of the sewage water gets treated before it reaches any river.
As far as noise pollution is concerned, it is higher than the prescribed limits in certain parts of Pune.
“The need of the hour is to generate more awareness among the masses on how to prevent pollution at various levels. You can see that concepts like eco-friendly Ganesh idols is gaining ground in today’s changing times. It is a good sign that people are becoming more conscious about environment conservation. Ganesh idols are being immersed in tanks now rather than in rivers. This is a healthy development but we still need to be more proactive,” Mangesh added.
