Even after being opposed by the political parties, Pune Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak, on Wednesday, said that the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) will complete the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) project by March 2012. This deadline has been given by the central government under JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission).
While addressing the press on Wednesday, Pathak stated, “I have reviewed the implementation of the BRTS and am confident that the 101-km project will be completed by March 2012. There are various issues affecting the implementation. People do not want cycle tracks and the BRTS but just want wider roads. The PMC has received nearly all the funds for the BRTS and we are going to implement it”.
A proposal to implement BRTS on 27 more roads of the city at a budget of Rs 98 crore was approved in January by the standing committee of PMC. The prominent areas to be covered are Tilak road, Bajirao road, Shivaji Nagar, F C Road and Jungli Maharaj road. The panel also decided that initially the BRTS will be operational on those roads which are already widened to 36 meters. Such roads will be having dedicated BRTS service while on the other hand; those roads which still haven’t widened up to 36 meters will have mixed BRTS.
He further added, “We will start with the mixed route in Pune. It will be easier to implement the BRTS in Pimpri-Chinchwad than in Pune, considering the road width and traffic congestion. In Pune we plan to start with the outskirts and then come to the city areas. Also, we will have to make provision for buses on the BRTS routes”.
The next plan for BRTS to start the second phase will arrive at a time when PMC is already out of time for completion of the pilot project on the 16.5 km stretch from Hadapsar to Swargate and then Swargate to Katraj.
Pathak also said, “There is nothing wrong with the pilot corridor except the entrance points. Central government officials were in Pune recently to review the BRTS routes and the PMC is, accordingly, going ahead with the project”.
Moreover, the opposition parties, BJP and Shiv Sena said that such a careless implementation of the project will surely cost a lot and PMC should first look after the completion of the pilot project before going to the next project.

Howdy would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
