The onset of the biting cold in the city is likely to be delayed by at least a week as the city continues to get drenched in the post monsoon showers. The rains and the cover of clouds will keep minimum temperatures for this time of the year in Maharashtra including Pune above normal.
A pro-rainfall system in the Arabian Sea and the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal are setting in the rains in the state and the city recorded 3.7 mm rain between 8.30 am on Sunday and 8.30 am on Monday.
Medha Khole, director (weather forecasting), India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a press conference on Monday said, “A low pressure area over east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea persists. A trough in the lower level easterly runs from Rajasthan across east-central Arabian Sea, Konkan and Goa and the Gujarat region. These are pro-rainfall weather conditions.”
“Areas in Maharashtra, which are close to Gujarat, as also the coastal regions, are expected to record more rainfall in the next six to seven days. This includes districts in northern Maharashtra including Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar, as also the Konkan region including Dahanu, Mumbai and surrounding areas,” said she.
The IMD’s weather report has also forecast the rainfall or thundershowers in the city in the next 48 hours.
Khole explained why the onset of the cold in the state is delayed. She said that the moisture incursion caused the cloudy conditions which led to an increase in temperature. “The cloudy conditions will continue till next week. The absence of dry weather conditions and clear skies will result in comparatively hot weather conditions. The minimum temperatures will remain above normal for at least six to seven days,” she said.
The IMD’s daily weather report states that the minimum temperature, which is normally 13 degrees Celsius in Pune in the month of November, was recorded as 21.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, and the maximum temperature was recorded as 30.7(+1) degrees Celsius.
