Good news for theater lovers of Pune. Legendary play Sangeet Maan-Apmaan, which was first showcased in the year 1911, will be staged again in its original form at the Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir on Saturday. Kirloskar Natak Mandali had originally produced this five-and-a-half-hour long play that was first staged at Mumbai’s Ripon Theatre on March 12, 1911, with K P Khadilkar directing it and Bal Gandharva as its chief artiste.
Theater company Marathi Rangbhoomi is showcasing the play in five cities this year as part of a memorial festival, with Pune being the last stop. The show in the city will have more than 40 songs, with three principal characters, and will include most of the rare original compositions that had been shortened over the years to reduce the length of the play and make it an abridged one.
“The play depicts a fictional tale of a woman whose ambitions are motivated by wealth. However, her ideas take a turn when she meets a senapati. Gradually realization sets into her that bravery is the most important motivating factor for a man. The moral of the story is basically the triumph of character over material superiority,” says Varsha Joglekar, who is part of the play. The music for the play had been weaved by Govindrao Tembe, whereas the script was written by Khadilkar.
Theater company Marathi Rangbhoomi, since the year 1949, has produced more than 1,000 shows of the play. The first play had featured renowned theater personality Jayamala Shiledar in the main female role of Dhamini.
The adaptation on Saturday will feature Shieldar’s 58-year-old daughter Kirti Shiledar in the same role. “This is a proud moment for me. My mother essayed the role more than 1,200 times in her career and my father first played the role of Lakshmidhar at the age of 18. My sister Dipti Bhogle played the role of the other hero, Dhairyawar, in some 50 shows. It’s a special achievement on her part. Our family has been closely associated with this play and I hope I can live up to the expectations again and play my character with utmost vigor and passion,” says Kirti who has been a part of 350 adaptations since 1972.
Although the play has retained its integral theme all these years, it had to undergo some changes in its format, like shortening the length to two breaks. However, this Saturday, Puneites will enjoy the show with its original three breaks.
“The audience has always shown immense interest and love towards the play. It is a sight to cherish when theater lovers come to watch the play and sing along with the songs or even mouth the dialogues with us. I strongly believe it is my generation’s responsibility to preserve the traditional form of Marathi musicals and present it to the youth,” Kirti says. The show will be free of charge.
“It is wonderful that art is still given importance in Pune at a time when the world is gripped by influences of materialism and consumerism. I am happy that the play is being staged in its original form and I am certainly looking forward to having some quality time this weekend,” said Rajni Shrivastav, a resident of Shivaji Nagar.

The very next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesn’t disappoint me as much as this particular one. After all, Yes, it was my choice to read through, however I truly thought you’d have something useful to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of moaning about something that you could fix if you were not too busy looking for attention.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Excellent blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any recommendations? Bless you!

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Hi would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
