Chatushrungi temple is one of the most important temples in Pune. The city of Pune is rich in its cultural heritage and temples make an integral part of this culture. Chatushrungi temple has been constructed on the slope of a hill on the Senapati Bapat Road.

Chatushrungi Devasthan Trust:
References show that the temple was built during the reign of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Now to look after the temple a trust called Chatushrungi Devasthan Trust has been formed. Different committees work for all sorts of arrangements in the temple and the management is considered to be one of the best in Pune.
The Name Chatushrungi:
The word ‘chatuh’ in Sanskrit denotes number four. Shrung in Sanskrit means the peaks of the mountain. Chatushrungi is the name of a mountain with four peaks. The temple is the holy shrine of goddess Chatushrungi Mata who is considered to be the protector of the mountain. Ambareshwari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati are some of the other names of Goddess Chatushrungi.
The Temple:
The temple stands as a symbol of power and devotion. The height of the construction is 90 feet and the width is 125 feet. Reaching the temple is a tough endeavor especially for the old people as one has to climb up over hundred steps. Fortunately “dolis” can be hired to carry old people up. The beautiful idol of goddess Chatushrungi is a spiritual satisfaction for her devotees.
The Legend:
The legend associated with the construction of the temple is worth noting here. A moneylender and mint owner called Durlabhdas who used to offer his services to the Peshwas was a great devotee of Goddess Saptshrungi of Vani, a place near Nasik. Every year in the month of Chaitra on the full moon day he would go to Vani to bow down before the goddess. But by and by he grew older and it became impossible for him to venture so far to Vani. He prayed and pleaded to the goddess for the solution to his problem. The goddess is said to have appeared before his eyes and told him that he need not come all the way to Vani from Pune and she would come on the mountain top in the northwest of Pune for him. The place told by the goddess was traced later and the swyayambhu idol of Hers was found on the mountain. Durlabhdas celebrated the coming of the goddess for him by minting a ‘Chatushrungi’ rupee. Later the temple was constructed on the place.
Navratri Fair:
The first nine days of the Hindu month Ashwin are celebrated as the Navratri festival. A big fair is held near the temple and oodles of devotees gather to get drenched in the grace of the Goddess.
Other Attractions:
Chatushrungi is actually a sacred place and certainly not a picnic spot. Still those who want to please their palate can enjoy variety of dishes at the snacks stalls at the foothill. You can also see and buy different varieties of handicraft items, footwear and gift articles at the stalls here. All in all it’s fun.
How to Get There:
Chatushrungi is one of the very important places in Pune and it is always crowded with devotees. This is the reason why regular bus service is available to this holy shrine from different spots in the city like Deccan, Swargate and Malwadi.

A Legend Associated with this temple is there was once a merchant in Pune who every year used to go Vani (saptshringi temple :mountain with 7 peaks), unfortunately due to old age he was not able to continue this tradition, so he felt very bad, one night Goddess Saptshringi, appeared in his dream and told him that the Goddess would come near pune on hill with 4 towers (thus came the name Chaturshringi)
