The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has come up with a novel programme called ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ (LaBL). As a part of this prudent plan, customized solar lanterns have been provided at cheaper rates to the villages facing electricity crisis.
As of now, nine villages in the districts of Raigad, Amravati and Ahmednagar have been selected for the implementation of LaBL. Twelve more villages will be benefited by this programme in the near future. TERI wants to replace paraffin and kerosene lanterns with the solar ones. As the situation of electricity supply in Maharashtra becomes grimmer, TERI has made an earnest attempt to provide some respite to the villagers. Miss. Akanksha Chaurey, Director, Decentralized Energy Solutions who is also the head of LaBL Programmme is also planning to bring down the cost of the lanterns while improving its performance.
It is a proven fact that solar lanterns are a clean and sure source of lighting. With the conventional sources of energy like petrol, diesel and kerosene being on the verge of exhaustion, it becomes our moral responsibility to stop the reckless use of these conventional sources and move to the unconventional ones like solar energy. Drastic steps are being taking all across the world to overcome the energy crisis. LaBL is indeed a part of it.
As for the cost of solar lanterns, it would range between Rs.2000 and Rs.3000. With the advent of new technology, the costs are expected to come down to Rs.1000 to Rs.1600. The lighting device has thus arrived as a boon for the villages suffering from excessive load shedding.
TERI introduced five different categories of solar lanterns. These devices work on light emitting diodes (LEDs). Some of the villagers from Belachiwadi, Hondawadi and Barshet in Raigad district have already started using them and are quite happy with the performance. Experts opine that the technology will soon sell like hot cakes as it is quite easy to use, effective and economically viable. The lanterns are available on rental basis as well. Villagers have to pay Rs.2 per day as the maintenance cost. Village solar charging stations have been put up for the recharging purposes.
Planners and thinkers in Maharashtra are looking at this move as an effective step towards rural electrification. They think that the efforts taken by TERI deserve admiration and rightly so.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
