Fergusson College, city’s oldest and historically significant college is all set to undergo a complete make over in the months to come. The Deccan Education Society has already prepared the draft to expand the college campus with the addition of some more institutes offering contemporary education in the city. The expansion and the digitization of the college are to be done by the International infrastructure experts keeping the century old Victorian style of the construction untouched.
This all is being planned on an occasion of the college completing 125 years on January 2, 2010. President Pratibhabai Patil is going to be the chief guest of the colleges’ post-centennial silver jubilee celebration next month.
Talking at the press conference on Monday, Vikas Kakatkar, vice-chairman of the Deccan Education Society said,
We have already approached some foreign universities to tie up with us to start various courses in our college campus. This will help our students to explore new opportunities all over the world. Our main focus for the first phase will be only on Life Sciences. In this case, we have finished initial level talk with four universities for join studies
As per the directives given by our body members, the representatives of these four colleges will be visiting us in the month of January, informed Kakatkar.
While talking about the need of the global education Kakatkar said that we too planning to begin e-learning center in our college campus which will begin functioning from the next academic year. Apart from this, we will also digitize all records and books in the next academic year, he said.
Kakatkar said
in the past five years, the management has spent close to Rs 28 crore on various developmental projects. The future projects are estimated to cost anywhere between Rs 15 and Rs 20 crore. The college alumni have proposed to donate Rs 9 crore for the expansion plans.
On talking to start additional centers in the college campus, he said,
A new building for life sciences and computer science will be built soon on a 50,000 sq feet land. The college has also forwarded a proposal worth Rs 45 lakh to the University Grant Commission (UGC) for opening a UPSC and MPSC competitive exam training centre for minority classes.
The college being one of the finest in the country, the alumni of this college includes Bharat Ratna Dhondo Keshav Karve, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, former prime ministers P V Narsimharao and V P Singh, Barrister V N Gadgil among others. The college alumni will gather on 2 Jan at 5:30 pm .
