City’s historical Yerwada central prison is all set to house the first ever open jail for women in the state. The announcement for the open jail was made during the legislative councils meeting in Nagpur on Tuesday. The open jail will be inaugurated by home minister R .R Patil on January 26.2010.
Ravindra Kedari, deputy inspector general of prison, Pune, informed that this will be the first open jail for women in the state. He further informed that state government’s decision will end the gender bias as women convicts too will get reduction in sentences.
Kedari, said,
most of the women will work on the 17-acre farmland adjacent to the women’s jail as most of them hail from rural background and have a sound knowledge of agricultural work.
The proposal for open jail for women was pending with government for last four years, and has now cleared and will be put into force very soon. This could become possible because of the state prison department’s special inspector general of police, Uddhav Kamble, who took up the matter seriously.
This is the first women’s jail located outside the jail premises opposite the Yerwada prison. At other places in the state, female wards are located in the jail premises, Kedari said. The selection procedure of the women convicts will soon begin as per the government directives.
The women earlier used to get remission of seven to eight days in a month, but they were not allowed to go out of the jail. They were allowed to meet their relatives once in a while, but with the open jail concept coming into effect, women convicts will be entitled for 13 months’ remission if they work for a year
Kedari said.
This decision has brought the relief for women convicts who are serving sentences. Now they can, with good conduct, walk out of the prison early.
