Muskan Shivani, a city based girl won the first runner up position at the 9th International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition held at the Chennai Trade Center in Chennai.
With Shivani, the other star who shined at the Competition was city based Mohammad Modak (7) -who tried 40 sums in 40 minutes under -8 years category. Shivan and Modak, are students from city’s Brain Gym Learning Center, SIP’s branch in the city, sources said.
The total number of the participants from all over the world was about of 3,000. The event was creative where students got to interact with students from the different countries and were made familiar with different mathematical tricks.
The competition was tough. The participants were challenged to attempt 100 sums in three minutes on the Abacus and visually. Relentless practice and determination saw every participant in a race against time, requiring split-second thinking while being accurate

Shivani had earlier done her best by winning the Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship 2008, which was a tough task. She had also participated at the Regional Championship.
Mentors Munira Dalal and Yasmin Kushonwal at the Brain Gym Learning Centre, who have taught different things to their students, strongly believe that Abacus Academy has capability to transform students and remove the number phobia.
At Abacus we not only cultivate young talent but also help them learn numerous things while developing their concentration and learning ability. It makes mathematics easier and simplifies the way they learn it. Regular work on the Abacus is essential for brain conditioning
