The Pune Rural Police busted a fresher’s party thrown by the Symbiosis students at a farm house in Theur on Sunday night. 489 students, most of them being the MBA students of Symbiosis Institute of Management have been arrested so far. The news has shattered the hub of culture and education once again with the memories of the 2007 rave party at the foothills of Sinhagad still being fresh.
Moreover, eighty students and seven organizers were detained later for consuming alcohol without permit and also for plying loud music. However all of them were released on bail later on Monday. All the students present at the party are aged between 22 and 28.
The SIMS students had thrown a fresher’s party on the occasion of Friendship Day at the farmhouse named “Sindhu”,27 kms away from the city along the Pune –Solapur road. The farmhouse belongs to a jeweller family in Pune. The students reached the place in 10 buses around 08.30 pm and started playing music aloud. Disturbed with the deafening sound of songs, the residents informed the cops at about 11 pm. The wanton behavior of the youth and the parking of the vehicles that caused traffic congestion in the area made the residents register a complaint against the party organizers.
When the police arrived at the party and investigated, the students told that they did carry the necessary permit for the party. But later it was found that no such prior permission had been taken at all. The law says that, a no objection certificate (NOC) must be taken from the police before arranging any such party where liquor will be served.
Among the 489 arrested 235 are girls. Over 300 bottles of liquor have been picked up from the spot. However, according to Mr. Balasaheb Mandge, the police inspector, students didn’t carry anything incriminating and hence no serious charges will be fixed against them.
The Symbiosis Society however has taken the incident as a blemish on the name of the institute and has appointed a four-member committee for the necessary investigations. The institute has admitted that 350 students out of 489 arrested are from the SIMS hostels.
