Pune, a center for socio-political movements in the country in 19th and 20th century, had contributed to the Indian National Congress (INC) that celebrated its 125th centenary on Monday. City was the first choice to organize the congress session but it was shifted to Mumbai due to plague outbreak in the city in December 1885.
City based Gopal Krishna Gokahale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Justice M. G. Ranade were loyal supporters and backbone of the organization. The congress, started as a political movement in the country seeking gradual change, went on becoming an aggressive agency because of Lokmanya Tilak’s belief that without being assertive the congress will not be able to attain the total freedom for the country.
The city’s well-known Wada, earlier called as Gaikwad Wada, now Kesari Wada was the center of all activities conducted by the national congress party. The Wada was also the residence of Lokmanya Tilak, one of the loyal supporters of the party.
Suhas Kulkarni, city based political thinker and analyst says that city was known for Tilak’s charisma and the contribution he has made to build the party foundation in the state. Lokmanya Tilk led the party at the forefront and demanded for the total political freedom from the British Raj. Tilak era which lasted two decades, ended with the death of Tilak in 1920 and the beginning of Gandhi age.
Despite leading the congress all over the country, Tilak never showed any interest in occupying the post of the congress president, said Kulkarni. Gokhale, who was recognized as a political Guru of Gandhi, was unanimously elected as the president of the Congress party in the pre-independence era. He was one among the Marathi Speakers to have been elected as the Congress party president.

My father started smoking when he was 6. He would sneak butts. He was addicted and smoked everyday. He had an indentation in his lip where he would hold his cigarette. He died of lung cancer after smoking your cigarettes all these years. The last thing i remember is that indentation in his lip.
