As many as 92 students from the Lexicon International School, Wagholi helped clean up the Mula Mutha river stretch in Yerawada under the guidance of ten of their teachers recently. The students who chipped in are from standard V to standard XII.
The cleanliness campaign was a part of the activity of the International Coastal Clean Up Day. It was done under the aegis of the Indian Maritime Foundation (IMF). The event was flagged of by the district coordinator Mr. Karan Ragade. Children set up a nice example of team effort and showed how the young energy is capable of bringing about the changes in society.
Students were divided into groups of six with a leader. The leader was supposed to tick every item picked on a data card which was provided by the IMF. Students were given the garbage bags and gloves as well.
Akshay, one of the students said, “I cannot believe that we managed to fill 27 bags from this small stretch. It is important to make people aware of how we are harming nature.”
One of the teachers said, “When we gave a call to the students we didn’t expect such kind of positive response from them. We didn’t have to force any one. All the students put in a willing effort. The way children worked is really commendable and we as their teachers feel proud of their dedication towards work.”
Children really enjoyed working in tandem to clean the stretch. They have decided to conduct such type of cleaning campaigns at regular intervals and also to keep the school premises clean.
