Pune makes its mark on the Indian historical calendar with Shivaji Maharaj whose systematic developments across the region made him one of the greatest warriors in Indian History. He was a ruler who saw the way forward and made his mark as a revolutionary. During his reign there was a lot of trading activity in the Southern part of the Maratha region, which increased demand for means of exchange. The barter system was on its way out. A variety of coins were introduced in the region by different reigning powers in the area at the time.
Shivaji introduced struck gold coins called Shivarais, also known as hons. They weighed heavier than the other coins, known as varahas that were in circulation at the time. The term ‘hons’ gradually came to be used as the standard name for gold varahas and Shivajis coins. If hons were the equivalent of gold coinage, the Rupee became the unit of Silver coinage. This same coinage was continued by the Peshwas. The denominations on the hon under Shivaji and later under the Peshwas were the pratapa (one half), darana (one quarter), chaval (one eigth), duval (one sixteenth), bele (one thirty secondth) and visa (one sixtyfourth of the hon).
During Shivaji’s Coronation as the Chhatrapati Maharaj on the 6th of June 1674, hons were mined especially in honor of him and distributed amongst the public. About 20 of these coins still exist today across the word. The round shaped coin has the words ‘Shri Raja Shiv’ and ‘Chhatra Pati’ on each side.
Historian Amol Bankar has said that two Hons will be displayed at the BIS exhibition and are owned by city based numismatist Bastilal Solanki. They will continue to be displayed during the four days of the event for public viewing. Today, these coins are worth several lakhs of Rupees and the city police are providing adequate security during the public display of the Coins.
