Puneites shiver as pinching cold wave continues in Pune. The city witnessed the coldest day of the season as the temperature dipped below 5.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday, whereas Ahmednagar saw the lowest temperature in the state with 1.7 degrees Celsius.
Sunny days are still a distant dream, for the city needs to be prepared for more chilly conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the minimum temperature may further go down in the next couple of days. Quite surprisingly, the minimum temperature recorded on Thursday was 10.3 degrees, and it went down to five on Friday. Earlier, Pune recorded the lowest temperature of this season (6.5 degrees) on December 20, 2010, whereas the lowest temperature in the last season was 9.1 degrees on January 23.
Puneites woke up to severe cold conditions on Monday as school, college students and office-goers had a difficult time in dealing with the biting chilly weather. IMD officials informed that the sudden drop in the temperature was due to clear skies and the strong northerly winds blowing in the entire state of Maharashtra. “The severe cold wave conditions are prevailing everywhere in the state, except the Konkan region,” they said.
“We were expecting the temperature to go down to 6 or 7 degrees by Friday last week, but a fall below 5 degrees was quite unexpected. It is quite difficult to predict a fall of such magnitude, but the possibility of the mercury touching 4 degrees cannot be ruled out during the next couple of days,” said director of IMD, Medha Khole.
On the abrupt rise and fall in temperature over the past week, Khole went on to say, “It is because the direction of the wind has altered. Until now, we were experiencing southeastern winds that bring in moisture but now the temperature has dipped due to strong northerly dry winds. We had some cloudy days during the last week while now the sky is clear, which is adding to the overall cold conditions.”
She also informed that the north winds are now slowly shifting towards the southern belt, resulting in the fall of temperature in interior Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Major parts of north India are in the grip of severe cold wave conditions, were the maximum temperature is swaying between 7 and 16 degrees at all major cities.
Severe cold wave conditions also prevailed in some parts of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, Central Maharashtra, Vidarbha and north interior Karnataka and at isolated places in west Rajasthan and Telangana.
In another ominous development, severe cold climate affected the poultry farms in Junnar taluka, near Pune, with some three lakh broiler chicks being found dead, taking the estimated loss to around Rs 75 lakh.
“We have never witnessed such severe cold wave earlier in our lives. The cold is affecting the food intake of the chicks and chicken alike. This is resulting in the death of chicks. The taluka alone has over 15-lakh chicken. The firms supplying chicken to metros have entered into agreements with the farmers for chicken breeding. Sadly, the chicks that the farmers had bought recently for the purpose breeding died in the unexpected cold wave,” said Madhukar Vibhute, chairman of the Junnar Taluka Poultry Association to the media.
Normally, the winter season sees more demand for eggs and chicken. Hence, many farmers had bought chicks. Had they all been alive now, they would have been ready for sale in the next 40 days. Now, the farmers have taken up precautionary measures to keep the shed warm by covering the poultry shelter with plastic sheets and other material.
“Regrettably, the power supply here is irregular. Otherwise, we could have used electric bulbs to generate heat inside poultry shelters. Some farmers do use electric heaters, but such efforts are restricted, for everyone cannot afford it.” said Vibhute.
