Both heavy and light vehicles will have to pay Rs. 5 more from now on before entering the peripheries of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB). The Board has increased the commercial vehicle entry tax for the vehicles. Mr. Karan Makwani, the PCB vice president, was talking to the correspondents in this regard on Monday. He said that with the increased tax charges coming into effect, heavy vehicles would be paying Rs. 20 instead of Rs.15 and small vehicles would pay Rs.15 instead of Rs. 10
PCB charges entry tax to the commercial vehicles passing through the peripheries under its control. Commercial vehicle entry tax is one of the biggest sources of revenue income for the Board. As many as 13 entry tax collection centers within the cantonment limits of the PCB collect this tax and generate around Rs.2 crore incomes for the Board. The increase in the tax charges will now definitely help the Board increase the overall annual revenue.
One of the PCB elected members Mr. Shailendra Bidkar while talking to the correspondents said, “The PCB’s expenses are increasing by the day. Since vehicle entry tax is one of the main sources of income for the board, we decided to increase the existing rates.” According to him, the increase in the revenue could be spent on the development projects in the area such as beautification plans and maintenance of roads.
The PCB is also planning to restructure the vehicle entry tax system and minimize the ambiguities in the tax system contract terms. Mr. Makwani informed correspondents about this restructuring. He said that the term of experience in the contract seems ambiguous. It doesn’t state clearly what kind of experience is required to get the contract of collecting the entry tax.
The amendments in the contract terms are expected to be done by the end of this July. Mr. Makwani said, “A meeting was held in the last week of June for inviting the tender of the vehicle entry tax and issues were raised about the contract system. The tender process was postponed as a result. Another meeting has been planned in the future to discuss the issue of restructuring the contract system.”
