The state government has given a green signal to clear about four percent of the hills meant for the biodiversity parks (BDP). However, the environmentalists in the city are not very happy about this decision and do not want the implementation of this decision. This was announced by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
The city based NGOs, Green Pune Movement, environmentalists and several other activists have decided to oppose this decision. They seem quite determined to find a way not to let the government have its way. Pune based urban planner Anita Gokhle said “It is a shocking volt-face by the Congress which has been strongly advocating the BDP since 2005. We had a series of meetings on Tuesday to discuss the strategy to oppose the four percent construction decision. We will not allow any construction in the BDP. Over 90,000 citizens had supported the BDP when the DP for these villages was approved. We will launch a public movement in Pune and approach the state government to ask the rationale for permitting the construction.” The NGOs are quite confident that they will get the support of lakhs of citizens to oppose the construction at Biodiversity Park.
Vandana Chavan, a member of Green Pune Movement and NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) city unit chief supports the construction of BDP and does not want the government to give the land for construction. She has already written to the chief minister requesting him to respect the sentiments of the citizens. She said that “Citizens had supported the BDP. The state government should work on modalities to acquire land for BDPs.”
Various environmentalists of the city want to hold a meeting with the chief minister regarding this matter. Last year former chief minister Ashok Chavan had also held various discussions with politicians regarding the construction at BDP. These politicians were of the opinion that in order to save the hills, some construction should be allowed. This is because the owners would at least take of the greenery on their land and also save them from encroachment.
Although there is a lot of tussle between various groups, the villagers in the nearby areas have welcomed this decision. These villagers think that if there is construction on these hills, they will have job opportunity. If PMC acquires them, they will be full of slums.

We should have logical view looking at locations in Pune where there is no BDP as such reservation prabhat road, sahakar nagar, koregaon park old societies in Pune city you can see people in small piece of plot have planted trees and ample green is seen as against the barren hills around pune. I If 25 per cent construction is allowed on this land with single storey structures say 3000 sq ft contruction on 10,000 sq ft plot ie 30 percent construction 1500 sq ft ground and 1500 sq ft first then 8500 sq ft is still left for planting trees and is viable to construct and live up to a standard to maintain the garden and plants.Such owners WILL will AT their own cost PLANT GOOD VATIETY REES and wtaer them.

I think we must allow 25 per cent construction on this land with single storyblds. nATURALLY OWNERS WILL AT NO PUBLIC MONEY PLANT GOOD VATIETY TREES.
