National Council for cooperation and Training, New Delhi has organized two day debate competition on ‘Cooperatives-A tool for Socio-Economic development of Rural India’ at Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Training, Pune. The Competition kick started on Monday afternoon and will go on till Tuesday.
The students, participating in the competition, were from 36 universities across the country. The total number of the students who participated in the competition was about 33.The competition was chaired by Dr M. Amin and Shivajirao Patil, experts in the field of cooperation. The team of the jury for the competition included Hemlata Patil and Rajaram Keskar, both experienced in the cooperatives.
Mr. P. Mehra, student of G.B Panth University, Panthnagar favored the subject saying,
Cooperatives have been a milestone of the development that has taken place in the villages across the country. When governments overlooked the necessities of the villagers, then there was cooperation that gave a helping hand to hundred of thousands villagers to come out of the problems and now they are capable of living healthy life just because of the cooperation
said he.
Some said Cooperatives are the backbone of Grameen Bharat, some said Cooperatives totally failed to bring about the change in the villages as they all were corrupted and managed badly.
A student from the Banaras University, Riddhi Bharti spoke in opposition of the subject and also exemplified some facts which show the failure of the cooperatives in rural India. She said,
If Cooperatives had done good enough to support the needy in villages across the country, then why there are 49% of population is without bank accounts and almost 27% of villages are still under the dark due to no electricity. Despite the facts, if we are going to claim that cooperatives have helped a lot to develop the Rural India; then it will be our immaturity
Ram Prakash Sharma, a student of Banaras University spoke in favor of the immense contribution cooperatives have done so far to villages to help build the roads, provide water, electricity and the financial help to farmers to buy the modern equipments to cultivate the farm. He exemplified one such example of the cooperation in the country-Amul, which is providing jobs to thousands and making people stand on their feet. It also helps them to buy Cows and Buffalos so that they can produce milk and earn good money, he concluded.
The debate centered on the merits and demerits of the cooperation in the country. And it also helped to get an overview of the work cooperatives are doing in the country to eradicate poverty and provide the basic amenities to those who are deprived. Many students impressed judges by their thoughtful presentation and statistics they provided. The prize distribution function will be followed by the announcement of the winners of the competition and the repetition of the presentations they made during the two day debate competition.
