There have been times when you visit a police station to lodge a complaint and find the officer either sleeping or showing least bit of interest to help you. Well, finally the protectors of the society have realized their folly and have decided to act civil and responsible. It has been decided that police stations and posts across the state of Maharashtra will soon have reception desks, to guide visitors and complainants.
Ajit Parasnis, State Director General of Police (DGP), talking to the press during his visit to Pune, said the proposal is yet to get a nod from the home department. He was in the city on Monday to address the members of the women vigilance committees (WVCs) at the Centre for Police Research (CPR) during the inaugural function of a two-day workshop to commemorate its 25 years of existence.
“We have been receiving complaints for quite sometime now of the officials being uncooperative. As per the initiative the reception desks will inform people and help them to know which police official to meet to get their work quickly, besides improving the police-people relationship via positive interaction,” the DGP said, adding that the details of the plan is being worked out.
The ongoing workshop is being attended by more than 50 representatives from different districts of the state and the committee members act as counselors to settle disputes amicably, including cases of domestic violence.
“I think it will be rational if the WVCs and the police work together to create public awareness to curb crimes against women. With each passing day, shocking cases of human trafficking and child molestation are increasing at an alarming rate and these panels can play a decisive role to bring a check on them, besides spreading awareness on the much talked about issue of female foeticide,” he said.
Police Commissioner of Pune, Meeran Borwankar, who was also present at the inaugural function, said the WVCs in the state have done a commendable job regarding cases pertaining to domestic violence against women. “The panels have solved more than 71% cases, but it needs constitutional changes in order to stop human trafficking. The need of the hour is of regular training and guidance,” she said.
Social activist and editor of Milun Saryajani, Vidya Bal, went on to say, “Though the WVCs are doing exceptional work for the betterment of the society, the monthly meetings are still not taking place on a regular basis in certain cases. There are many people who still think twice before visiting police stations. In that case, they must approach WVCs attached to police stations.”
“I remember a time when I went to visit a police station and was utterly disappointed with the callous approach of the officials. I think the move is a responsible one and will help to get back the trust of the citizens on the administrative system,” opines Alok Despande, a resident of Karve Nagar.

I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.
