Retired IPS officer Suresh Khopade made a shocking claim on Monday that he had alerted the Mumbai Police about the possibility of a fatal blast in the Financial Capital of India through a letter written long back on March 19. The officer therefore feels that the blasts could have been avoided.
Khopade was talking to the correspondents in a press conference called at Patrakar Bhavan on Monday. He told that he had written a letter to Mumbai police chief Arun Patnaik in March and expressed his concern about the security measures in Mumbai.
Replying to the question if he had any particular intelligence inputs at his disposal, Mr. Khopade said that Mumbai had always been a soft target for terrorist attacks and his long experience as a police officer made him worried about the security in the city. He said, “In the letter I also said that the Mumbai police must carry on with community policing which was discontinued sometime back.”
The Community Policing impressed the Scotland Yard and they decided to start the similar kind of security units in the United Kingdom. Mr. Khopade has always been an advocate of the community policing. He has been in service in Maharashtra Police for more than thirty years. He started his career as the deputy superintendent of police, Bhiwnadi. His book enumerating the initiatives that he implemented during his tenure as an IPS officer has also been published. He retired from the Mumbai police as special inspector of CID very recently.
Khopade had also sent the copies of the letter to the chief minister of Maharashtra, home minister and the director general of police. He had also advocated the need of a SWOT analysis of the Mumbai police and wished to utilize his experience for the purpose.
He said, “There are several lacunae in the functioning of the Mumbai police and that is why bomb blasts, terrorist attacks and riots take place. The Mumbai police are not capable of handling social or political issues. They are only capable of controlling petty crimes, traffic and processions.”
