Cyclists in Pune remain in a constant state of fear of being hit by other vehicles and are perennially perturbed due to poor road conditions, space crunch and difficulty in crossing intersections. Parisar, an NGO working for traffic and transportation issues in Pune conducted a pilot survey and the results showed that the biggest fear of cyclists was safety while riding on the roads and crossing at intersections.
The survey, which included 102 men and two women, basically tried to zero-in at the profile of regular bicycle users, their problems and the measures needed to improve their security and comfort. On a positive note, as many as 92 respondents said that they would continue cycling despite facing innumerable problems.
Majority of bicycle users voiced in unison on the need of separate lanes for cycles, and a strict ban on any other vehicle entering the tracks. They also believe that conditions of roads also need to improve.
“There are foot paths, but no cycle paths. Fueled vehicles are much faster than manual ones, how do they expect us to compete with vehicles that are much faster than cycles? The concerned authorities must provide separate paths for cyclists.” said Kavitha Patil, a construction worker in Pashan.
Luckily, the number of accident cases among those who were surveyed was low. However, it is strongly recommended that the concerned authorities must pull up their socks and do the necessary bit to ascertain safety for bicycle users. The solution basically lies in the idea of “safety in numbers”. The more the number of cycle users on roads, the safer it is for them.
Incidentally, women bicycle users also wanted separate lanes for them to avoid accidents due to rash driving by motorcyclists. The survey showed that many had met with small accidents due to rash driving or when drivers of the cars opened vehicles’ door. Furthermore, most motorcyclists have an apathetic attitude and they don’t even look back after a hitting a cyclist.
“I think with so much pollution around, it is rational to travel by bicycles. And if someone is trying to do that, then concerned authorities in Pune must make sure that they keep the cycle tracks clean and free from encroachment. Cycling will not only keep us fit but also reduce the traffic congestion in the city,” said Rajesh Shukla, a resident of Law College Road.
