Dapoli is one of the most important tourist places in the Konkan region of the State of Maharashtra. The place bathing in the pristine natural beauty with soothing seashore and greenery and scenery all around attracts tourists from different parts of the country throughout the year.
Dapoli is popularly known as ‘Mini Mahabaleshwar’ owing to the consummate natural beauty of the place. (Mahabaleshwar- a hill station in the Satara district of Maharashtra- is considered to be an epitome of natural beauty.) The cool climate of Dapoli has a soothing touch which is the prime need for the tired souls and weary minds.
Dapoli is just 8 km away from the Arabian Sea and serves as a main town for many villages around it like Sarang, Bhopan, Dabhol, Jaalgaon and many more. It comes in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
Historical Importance:
Dapoli is the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve who devoted all his life to the education and empowerment of women. Great souls like Lokmanya Tilak and P.V. Kane were born here. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar also studied here in the Alfred Gadney Highschool for some years. Thus the place is historically important.
Places to visit:
As regards the places worth visiting in Dapoli, following are a few of them:
1) Panhalekaji Caves:
This is a must visit place located on the Dapoli-Dabhol road. You can also reach here from Khed via Vakavali and Tetavali. You will love the beautiful caves here and admire the deft hands that crafted them out. Vehicles reach up till the caves. Bird watchers can find many beautiful birds and reptiles in this area.
2) Suvarnadurg and Kanakdurg Forts – Harne:
Around 17 km from Dalpoli at Harnai, lie two grand forts called Suvarnadurg and the Kanakdurg. Out of them Kanakdurg is a land fort and Suvarnadurg is a sea fort. Both the forts were built during the Adil Shahi reign and later fortified by King Shivaji. Inside Kanakdurga you can see a big lighthouse as well.
3) Unhavare- Hot Water Spring:
Unhavare village which is just 20 km away from Dapoli is famous for the natural hot water springs. There are a few guest houses as well where tourists can stay. People living in the surrounding areas come here every day for bathing. Separate shelters are available here where men and women can take a dip into the hot waters. There are a couple of Hindu temples and a mosque as well.
4) Kadyavarcha Ganapati:
This is an added attraction near Dapoli. Anjarle village near Dapoli is famous for the Ganesh Temple called Kadyavarcha Ganapati. The temple is constructed on the cliff and so this name. (Kada in Marathi means cliff in English) The wooden pillars of the temple are the main architectural feature here.
The Ganesh idol in the sanctum is very beautiful. The trunk of Lord Ganesh is bent towards His right and so the place is regarded very auspicious. The stone staircase on the right side of the Shikhar catches the eye of all. A beautiful view of coconut trees and beetle nut trees is another turn on here. The pond right in front of the temple is one more attraction. People gather here to see the fish and the turtles in the pond.
5) Murud Beach:
Murud Beach is one of the longest beaches in Konkan which is spread around 10 km away from Dapoli.

There are many private lodging and boarding facilities available in Dapoli.

Direct buses to Dapoli are available both from the Shivajinagar and the Swargate Stations.
