Temples in and around the city of Pune are many. These are not just the constructions in brick and stone. These temples have always been the source of inspiration for valorous warriors, freedom fighters and great leaders in the Indian history. Even in today’s age of computers, these temples retain their status as the powerhouses of the theists. People look at these temples as the centres where they can have a direct contact with the Almighty. Temples in Pune are important from tourism point of view as well.
Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple:
Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple on the famous Karve Road in Pune is one of the important worship places in the city. This is a holy shrine of Lord Ganesh. The temple is one of the five temples maintained by the Shri Devdeveshwar Sansthan, Parvati and Kothrud Pune; Sarasbaug Ganesh Temple, Parvati Temple, Mrutyunjayeshwar Temple and the Ramana Temple being the other four.
Where is it located?
The Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple is located on the busy Karve Road in Pune which is around 8 km from the Swargate Station and frequent buses to Karve Road are available both from Swargate and from the Deccan Bus Stop. From the famous Mrutyunjayeshwar Temple which is a holy shrine of Lord Shiva, the Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple is just 5 minutes away.
History of the Temple:
As for the history of the temple, no historical reference has been found so far that could trace the period of the construction of the temple. But references say that like the Mrutyunjayeshwar Temple, this temple, too belonged to Sardar Haripant Phadke, a nobleman in the royal court of the Peshwas who later donated the estate to the Peshwas as a part of dowry.
Temple at Present:
Dashabhuja Ganesh has always occupied an important place in the hearts of thousands of votaries of Lord Ganpati and continues to be the source of inspiration and spiritual exaltation for many. As you enter from the main arch, you feel the divine presence of Lord Ganesh in the surroundings. Beautiful Ganesh idol has been crafted out on the stone of the main arch. The Shikhar of the temple, too, carries beautiful art work. The beautiful Ganesh idol in the sanctum of the temple is the main attraction here. The idol is a stone work in chrome color which is an excellent piece of work. Goddess Riddhi sitting in Ganpati’s lap too looks beautiful. The name Dashabhuja needs some explanation here. ‘Dahsa’ in Sanskrit means ‘ten’ in English and ‘Bhuja’ is the Sanskrit equivalent for ‘arms’. The idol of Ganesh here has ten arms and hence the name ‘Dashabhuja’.
Every day early in the morning, priests offer pooja to Lord Ganesh in the accompaniment of the chanting of sacred mantras. Devotees attend the aarti after the pooja in the morning and again at 7.00 P.M. The temple is heavily crowded on the occasion of Sankashti Chaturthi and Ganesh Jayanti.
Hanuman Temple:
Outside the Ganesh Temple you find a small temple of Lord Hanuman on the left side. Devotees offer garlands and oil to the Hanuman idol on every Saturday.
All in all, you can breathe in the serenity and solemnity which are all pervasive in the premises of the Ganesh Temple. Thousands of Ganesh devotees visit the temple every day and the number raises ten times during the Ganesh festival every year.
The office of the temple trust is on the right side of the Ganesh idol. You can offer pooja, abhishekas or even donate money for the revamping of the temple.
Outside the temple you find flower merchants from whom you can buy the necessary offerings.
Timings: The temple is open from 6.00 A.M. to 10.00 P.M. every day.
