Who is Lord Datta?
According to Hindu mythology, Rishi Atri and his wife Anasuya were leading a serene life. Both were quite contented with their lot. Devi Anasuya was known to be the most pious woman in the world which became envy for Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Laxmi and Goddess Parvati who joined forces and persuaded their husbands Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva respectively to go to the earth and test Anasuya’s fidelity and piety. The three gods went to Atri’s ashrama as guests when Anasuya was all alone and asked her to serve them food. But the demand was not so simple for Anasuya to fulfill. The gods would accept food on the condition that Anasuya should serve them without wearing any clothes. Her righteousness and religion would not allow her to go naked before other men. Neither could she turn down their request of serving them food. She was caught on the horns of dilemma but soon found out the way to come out of it. She thought men at her doorstep could not be ordinary men and must be the gods willing to test her piety.

The gods while asking for alms had said, “Mata, Bhavati Bhiksham Dehi” meaning “O Mother, serve us food” As she was called mother by them, she prayed to Rishi Atri in her mind and decided to treat the three men as her own children. It was because of Anasuya’s fidelity and piety that by the time she came back from her kitchen with food to serve to the three men, they had been turned into newly born babies and her breasts started producing milk. Anasuya breastfed these babies and put them to sleep in the cradle.

When Rishi Atri came back home and knew all the account from Anasuya, he praised the three gods. The babies in the cradle woke up and appeared in their original form of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. They were all praise for Anasuya and declared her as the most pious woman in the world. Lord Dattatreya thus was known as the son of Rishi Atri and Devi Anasuya.

About the Temple:
History: The place where the temple stands today used to be a small garden in the past. A man had been appointed for watering the saplings in the garden. One day in the year 1968, while watering he found two padukas (footwear made of metals which are regarded very sacred in Hindu religion). In 1975 a small temple was erected and the padukas were placed in the sanctum. In 1981 Shri Gurudev Datta Trust was founded for the maintenance of the temple. The temple that we see today was ready in 2008 and today it is considered to be one of the important Datta temples in the city.

As you enter the premises of the temple, you enter into an altogether different world. You will hardly find a place as quiet and tranquil as this holy shrine of Lord Datta. The entire construction is a beautiful work in marble. You can’t help but to admire the deft hands that erected such a work.

As you enter the sabha Mandap i.e. assembly hall, you see all the 52 chapters of Shri Gurucharitra displayed in the pictorial form. Before you enter the sanctum, the beautiful Ganeshpatti on the door catches your attention. Above the Ganeshpatti you can also see the icons of Navnathas, nine influential seers in the Datta Sampraday.

The sanctum has been constructed around a big Audumbar tree. The idol of Lord Dattatray is so beautiful that you feel like sitting before the idol for hours together. The feather of peacock in the golden crown of Lord Datta catches your eye at the outset. Beside the Datta idol, on the left side, you see a beautiful icon of Goddess Durga. You also see the small idols of Lord Ganesh and Lord Hanuman in the sanctum.

Big paintings of Saints like Shri Sai Baba, Swami Samarth and Gajanan Maharaj and Shripad Shri Vallabh add to the sanctity of the place. All the gods are offered pooja early in the morning every day.

Devotees of Lord Datta always flock here in big numbers. Especially on Thursdays over 5000 people visit the temple. Every year the trust celebrates Datta Jayanti festival in the Hindu month of Margasheersh. That time many events like Datta Yaag, Satya Datta Pooja and Cultural programs are organized for seven days continuously.

The trust runs a charity clinic as well. The premises of the temple are very clean. There is a small but lush green garden at the back of the temple. Pure drinking water is available here. Those who want to sit here for meditation can take the rosary beads from the temple office. Mr. Nagesh Karpe is the secretary of the temple management and has played a vital role in the renovation of the temple.

Timings:
The temple is open from 6.00 am to 1.00 pm and again from 04 pm to 09.00 pm.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
