Saint Tukaram:
Maharashtra is the land of saints. Saint Tukaram was not just a saint from Maharashtra but a visionary social reformer as well. He was born in Dehu and stayed here for most of his life preaching the way of righteousness to the people. Saint Dnyaneshwar in the 12th century had founded a new sect in the Hindu religion called Bhagwat Sampraday. The foundation of this sect was based on the noble principles like equality, fraternity, righteousness and meditation of Lord Vitthal. It was Saint Tukaram who through his own behavior, his poetry and his sermons carried forward the message saint Dnyaneshwar wanted to spread among the people of Maharashtra.
Among the chief attractions of Dehu, the cenotaph of saint Tukaram is the must visit place. Thousands of devotees of Lord Vitthal and followers of Saint Tukaram come here every day and pay obeisance to the memories and great work of this saint. The beautiful temple of Tukaram has been constructed here on the banks of the River Indrayani by his younger son Narayanbaba in the year 1723. There are many other temples near the Tukaram temple that add to the religious atmosphere of the place.
The rock where Tukaram had sat for a long fast when all his poetry which is popularly known as Abhangas was immersed in the waters of River Indrayani too can be seen here. This is the place where River Indrayani is said to have appeared in the human form and returned all of Tukaram’s Abhangas. The Gatha temple on the riverbanks of Indrayani too is a place worth visiting.
How to reach Dehu?
Frequent buses ply between the Swargate station and Dehu and so reaching Dehu is not a big deal. So plan you must a trip to Dehu during your Pune travel as the place will definitely fill you with utmost spiritual satisfaction.

I wish to participate the Dehu-Pandharpur Yatra this year (2011) for Ashada ekadasi. I am from Chennai aged 63, able to walk. Please guide me where to stay at Dehu & enroute & Pandharpur. Should I join any group of devotees or can I follow the devotees myself? Will I be able to have Dharshan at Pandharpur on the day of Ekadasi by standing in the queue? Please guide the best way. Based on this I would like to book my train ticket.
