The Shetkari Parishad has demanded for Rs 2000 per tonne as a Statutory Minimum Price (SMP) for per tonne of sugarcane for this crushing season.
The president of the Shetkari Sanghatna, Raghunath Patil said at press conference held on Wednesday that they are going to organize a state level convention of farmers on August 9 in Pune where the same demand would be emphasized.
He further said that the farmers have been getting SMP of only Rs 802 to Rs 811 for the first nine per cent of sugarcane for the last 10 years. However, the SMP hiked to Rs 1,250 for 2008 to 2009 that was not enough. Now, the Shetkari Sanghatna demanded for Rs 2000 per tonne for the year 2009 to 2010.
Patil had also raised the issue of buffalo’s milk and cow’s milk. Other demands including the price of Rs 1,100 per quintal for wheat, jawar, onion, bajra, rice and corn; constructing dams to generate electricity and filing police complaints against the banks charging high interest rates were also made in the parishad.
