The recent Rs 3.78 hike in the diesel prices within the city has brought down the diesel sales in the city by five percent and according to some city based petrol pump owners, the diesel sales outside the municipal limits of Pune have increased by 10-20 per cent owing to the fact that diesel is cheaper by Rs. 1.20 outside the city as those petrol pumps don’t have any octroi levied on the fuel sales.
Mr. Ali Daruwalla, spokesperson, Petrol Dealers’ Association was talking to the correspondents yesterday. He expressed his concern about the fact that outbound truck drivers prefer refueling from the pumps outside the city limits and after the price hikes, the number has even increased. He said, “Many of them, including inbound tempo and tanker drivers, also stock up extra diesel to be used within the city by filling it in plastic cans, which is illegal.”
PMC octroi chief Hemant Nikam told correspondents that he didn’t know anything about such practices as the octroi vigilance team has always looked into the matter cautiously. He further said, “Those who transport diesel in this manner are fined heavily. The fine imposed is ten times of the fuel’s octroi amount.”
The correspondents contacted the owner of a Kondhwa Budruk based petrol pump which lies around 500 meters outside the city’s octroi limits. He told the correspondents that the diesel sales at the pump have dropped by 30% since the increase in the fuel prices. He said, “I would sell 8,000 liters of diesel per day before the hike, which has now come down to 5,000 liters a day. However, the pumps outside the municipal limits are often crowded with vehicles. Sometimes outbound vehicles stop at my pump for a small amount of diesel, only so they can tank up from a pump outside the city’s peripheries.”
He added, “Sales of diesel in my pump have come down from 3,500 to 3,000 liters per day after the hike. The nearest pump outside the municipal limits is just five km from my pump on Solapur highway. Transporters and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) passing by my pump often fill a little diesel from here and then stock up once they cross city limits.”
The petrol pump owners in the city are upset with the recent diesel price hike as it has led to the loss of customers. It is very much evident that the petrol pumps outside the city’s peripheries are crowded for refueling whereas the city based pumps seem almost deserted. The price hike has also invited the illegal sales practices which is a major concern for the petrol pump owners.
