Owing to the incessant rains for three days now and consequently brimming dams and other water reservoirs in and around the city, the disaster management cell of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has assured the citizens of Pune that the cell is all prepared to tackle any flood-situation and there is no reason to worry. Even if the monsoon gets heavier, the cell is all equipped to deal with the increasing water level in the city. The PMC has purchased new transceivers, tree cutting machines and floating pumps for the disaster management purposes.
Deputy Commissioner Praveen Ashtikar is the head of the disaster management team. He was talking to the correspondents yesterday regarding the preparations of the cell. He said, “The PMC purchased 25 sets of walkie-talkies for internal communication. If the cellphone network breaks down, this system will come to our rescue. Besides, we are starting video-conferencing service in ward offices which will be connected to the municipal commissioner’s office.”
The PMC had anticipated the flood like situation and purchased floating pumps to flush out water as well 12 tree-cutting machines recently. Ashtikar said, “Tree-pruning machines are with the fire brigade and the garden department. Floating water pumps are given to ward offices and fire brigade. This equipment will empower the disaster management cell to tackle the flood-like situation.”
As per the information given by Mr. Ashitkar, the cell has been vigilant 24×7 and is keeping an eye on the roads and chowks where waterloingging is a regular experience during every monsoon. The cell has planned to install cameras at 50 such spots and 20 cameras have been installed as well. The cell has fitted 3 cameras at Ram Nadi in the part behind the Praj Industries as well as around the housing societies. Among the other parts of the city where the cameras have been installed, Shivchaitanya society in Kothrud, Ayodhya society at Market Yard, Karve Statue and Alka Takies Chowk.
