It has been ages since people have been talking about staying away from bursting crackers in Diwali. But there’s a wide chasm between what people preach and what they actually practice. Setting up an example on how-to have a fun-filled Diwali without bursting a single cracker, children from more than two-dozen families residing in Oval Nest society in Warje, Pune¸ organized a cultural program from the money they have saved on firecrackers.
It was indeed a difficult task for the young minds, aged between 5 and 15, to resist the temptation of bursting crackers. But they did manage to win mind over hearts and showed the world that if one is governed by the feeling of humaneness, then one can go to any extent to serve and act for wellness and betterment of others and the society at large. The concern for the environment gripped them and took over the momentary joy of bursting crackers and each and every kid decided in unison to not to buy firecrackers this festive season.
“Firecrackers are harmful to environment for they cause air and noise pollution. So, I made up my mind not to buy any crackers and went and told my parents,” class IV student Arya Tammewar, who resides in Oval Nest housing society, Pune.
Arya is amongst 25 children from the society, who have refrained from buying firecrackers and initiated an awareness campaign in their area to spread the message of eco-friendly Diwali celebrations.
“When their Diwali vacations began, children held discussions among themselves and decided on a cracker-less Diwali this year. Furthermore, they prepared pamphlets carrying the message of eco-friendly Diwali and pasted them in staircases, lifts, and other places in the society,” said Anuj Jagtap, a resident of Oval Nest housing society.
To substitute for the fun of bursting crackers, the young minds finally decided to organize a cultural program that included singing, dancing, and other cultural events showcased by them on Diwali night. The best treat of the evening was a special 30-minute drama staged by the children on eco-friendly Diwali, which was received well by the society members.
“These children actually showed all of us that with determination and willingness, one can achieve anything in life. I am sure that people will take note of this noble initiative and follow a similar path and celebrate pollution and noise free Diwali next year in Pune,” ended Anuj.
